Shell Argina - Power Engine Oils Product Portfolio

Shell Argina is a series of high-performance engine oils engineered specifically for medium-speed trunk-piston diesel engines. Shell Argina Oils are designed for use in heavy fuel (LSFO & HSFO).

These engines are common in:
Marine propulsion (small to mid-size vessels)
Marine auxiliary systems
Stationary power generation facilities

These oils are designed to tackle challenging conditions such as heavy fuels, high engine stress, and extended operating hours - typical in marine and power applications.

(To meet the challenges of a wide range of equipment designs and applications, Shell has designed a portfolio of oils that enables you to choose a product to match your technical and operational needs).

FEATURES:

  • Grade Variants and Base Number (BN) Shell Argina comes in several grades, each distinguished by its Base Number (BN) – A measure of the oil’s ability to neutralize acid:
(Argina S3 - BN 30: Mainstream grade balancing deposit control and oil life)
(Argina S4 - BN 40: Enhanced protection under higher stress and sulphur content)
(Argina S5 - BN 55: Top-tier, greatly extended oil life, superior cleanliness for the most demanding, modern engines)
  • Deposition Control (High detergency cleans crankcases, pistons, valve decks, and especially the tricky piston undercrown area - a hotspot for soot and deposits)
  • Oxidation & Viscosity Management (These oils resist thickening and breakdown even under high heat and pressure, extending oil life)
  • Excellent BN Retention (Particularly with Argina S5, BN retention is significantly improved—12.6% better than a typical reference oil - delaying acid buildup and the need for oil sweetening (adding alkaline additives).
  • Real-World Results (In one field trial, Shell Argina S5 led to up to 22% less oil consumption and 18% better BN retention compared to previous oils - which translates to lower operational costs and cleaner engine internals)

Applications and Use Cases :

  • Ships & Marine Vessels: (Both propulsion and auxiliary engines benefit from Argina’s cleanliness and deposit control under heavy and variable operating loads)
  • Stationary Power Plants (Especially in emerging markets, where power demand is high and maintenance windows tight, Argina helps ensure cleaner engines and lower oil use)
